New Cadillac Water Pump

A vehicle needs regular care. Most people are aware of their oil change schedule, but other scheduled maintenance often goes by the wayside. That's scary because some of the most important maintenance only happens once in a vehicle's lifetime. One crucial service that is consistently ignored by drivers is water pump replacement. It is crucial to have this service completed on time.

Replacing Your Water Pump

The fluid that keeps your car engine cool is circulated through its system by a water pump. Eventually, that pump will wear down and need replacement. If the pump completely stops working, your vehicle will be at risk for catastrophic damage. Before it gets to that point, a water pump replacement service will swap the old, worn pump for a brand new one. This process can be involved and tricky for amateur mechanics. Since many water pumps require the removal of multiple other parts to access, a lot of water pump services will be paired with other scheduled maintenance to save you money. Depending on the model, this could include replacing seals, the drive belt, the timing belt or a number of other parts.

When Your Water Pump May Need To Be Replaced

Manufacturers include the water pump in their lifetime maintenance schedules. Water pumps can run for a long time, but they don't last forever. For most models, the recommended mileage for replacement will be between 50,000 and 100,000 miles. You can check your manual to see when yours should be replaced. If you push the pump past its schedule, or if you ignore signs of damage (water stains or slow coolant leaks), the pump will be at risk of failing while you drive. This comes with a lot of related problems. If the water pump is attached to the drive belt, the car will stop driving and leave you stranded. This is the best-case scenario.

If the water pump is attached to the timing belt, it can disrupt the belt's cycle. In many engines, this leads to bent oil valves, and it will cost thousands of dollars to fix the problem. In either case, driving without a water pump will cause the engine to rapidly heat. If you don't shut the engine off immediately, it will be easy to crack the engine, and only a total engine replacement can solve the problem.
